The Royal Ballet School

The Royal Ballet School

The Royal Ballet School was founded by Dame Ninette de Valois in 1926. On renewal of the lease with the Crown Estate, the Governors embarked on a major programme of refurbishment and new building. BHM were appointed as architects for the whole project.

A three phase project over six years

The works included new buildings for boarding houses, Headteacher’s house, dining hall & kitchens and ballet studios, as well as an extension to one ballet studio and the refurbishment of classrooms, studios, common rooms, staff rooms and offices.

This involved the challenges of a Grade I Listed Building, Grade I Listed Landscape and the creation of new pathways, roads,
courtyards and performance spaces. The project required the
school to remain in occupation during the redevelopment.

The project was completed within budget and on time.

"Our experience in working over 5 years with BHM on a strikingly creative £25 million Redevelopment Grade 1 Listed Project, from initial planning submissions through to final building execution, delivered on both time and cost budget, was inevitably demanding and ultimately very satisfying for all parties. As a consequence, The Royal Ballet School at White Lodge, Richmond Park acquired 7 new buildings and an enhanced reputation for excellence in its balletic, dormitory accommodation and dining facilities…indeed a world leader in a unique setting."
