Haberdashers' Aske's - New Sports Centre

A master plan was undertaken in 1997, which, amongst other recommendations proposed a new swimming pool and sports hall to replace existing structures on the site adjacent to the existing sports hall where it can best supplement and support the existing PE Facilities.

Initial feasibility proposals were prepared in 2002, with the final design being submitted for Planning in late 2012 and approval was received in 2013.  Construction commenced in February 2014 and the building was completed in January 2016.

The new building accommodates a new 25m x 8 lane pool (this replaced a 6 lane profiled pool) which has a moving floor, so that a constant depth of 2m can be provided for water polo, as well as 3m for sub-aqua and zero for wheelchair access.   A large viewing area is also provided at first floor level for competitions and school events.

3 dedicated wet changing rooms are provided as well as 2 outdoor or dry changing rooms.  Under a separate contract the changing rooms within the existing sports hall building were also modernised and expanded. New staff changing and disable changing facilities have also been provided.

A new entrance and reception desk, together with a café and school shop was provided in order to bring a focus to the sports facilities and allow access to be controlled from within the new sports centre.  This new reception also controls access into the existing sports hall and dry changing rooms via a new glazed link.

The replacement of the existing squash courts, tuck shop, removed to make way for the new sports centre have also been accommodated within the new building, together new sports orientated classrooms and conference/meeting room facilities at the first floor level, which can also when required compliment the public viewing areas to the pool, sports hall and climbing wall.

The two squash courts are glass backed and are separated by a wall which can move to accommodate either a double’s court or move completely to one side, to allow for dance and other activities such as martial arts, to take place with the space.

An enhance fitness suite is also provided at the first floor level, which has views into both the sports hall and swimming pool hall.  The new sports hall is sized such that it can accommodate basketball,  tennis, badminton and 5 a side football and therefore compliments the adjacent existing much larger sports hall.
