Sevenoaks Nature Reserve

Project: Competition Entry

Location: Sevenoaks, Kent

BHM designed a new lakeside visitor centre, inspired by the image of a stone being cast into the water. Open and organic in form, it was designed to merge into the landscape and to take advantage of the views, sightlines and pathways crossing the site.

The built elements comprised flexible modules within the radial plan, aiming for low maintenance and zero carbon operation. The timber structures embraced existing trees, and featured Kent weatherboarding, wool insulation and ground loop heat source. A pier cantilevered out over the lake. The development was designed to be built in separate phased and funded segments.
