COMPANY PROFILE
Founded in 1956 by
Jon Barnsley, the Practice is located in Barnes south-west
London, on the River Thames, with easy access to the city centre
and transport for all areas of the country.
Initially we
concentrated on work for schools, but now also offer diverse
skills covering housing, hospitals and commercial property. The
Directors are supported by experienced and highly-qualified
Associates and Architects, dealing with Design, Project
Management, Building Technology, Interiors, Computer-aided
Design and Perspective Art
The Company has enjoyed a steady
and planned expansion since the construction of a private house
for John Ounsted, the then Headmaster of Leighton Park School in
Reading. The practice proceeded to work for a number of
different Independent schools including Bedales, Shrewsbury and
Abingdon, culminating in 1983 with the major new boarding house
and strategic plan for Stowe School which was run by both Jon
and John Cahill, the new partner who had recently joined the
firm.
Since 1983 the practice has made
a conscious effort to expand and concentrate on its substantial
reputation for work in the education sector. The number of
schools for which the practice has completed work now numbers in
excess of one hundred.
The present directors (and owners
of the Company) are John Cahill, Mike Harrison, David Bryan and
Steve Leech.
Each Director takes a specific
role in the company, John Cahill is the Managing Director, Mike
Harrison is the Technical Director, David Bryan is the Design
Director and Steve Leech is the Information Technology
Director. We regard ourselves as a national company.
Beneath the Directors we have a
second tier of six Associates : Ray Poulter, Richard Campanini,
Robert Macpherson, Nathan Beevers, Ciaran Dance and Matt Weyham.
The Associates carry out the practical running of a project with
the help of a third tier of Architects and assistants. A
specific project team will be formed for each project comprising
a Director, Associate and Architects to complete detailed
design, production information through the construction period
to completion.
A principle aim of Barnsley
Hewett and Mallinson is that our clients will always have
personal contact with a Director or Associate of the company, throughout the
project, to ensure that it is completed successfully on
programme and to budget.
While we still maintain a limited
number of drawing boards, principally for design and
presentation work, 95% of our drawing work is now computer based
for production information. We are able to transfer information
and communicate between Consultants via E-mail. We also produce
3 dimensional computer models and "fly through" videos both to
aid design and as a means of communication to our clients.
OUR
MISSION
We believe that
Consultation is the Key
A project starts
with the fullest discussion with the Client to establish an
exact brief for the proposed building. We design in sympathy
with the environment and respect the quality of existing
architectural fabric, combining current building technology with
the use of proven building materials and detail which will
achieve long life and low maintenance. The ultimate aim is to
provide a building which meets the clients’ aesthetic and
functional needs within their given cost parameters. |
