Birley’s Pavilion - The King's School, Canterbury

Winners of a limited competition in 2003, BH&M were appointed by the King’s School, Canterbury to design a new sports pavilion for their playing fields, known as Birley’s Field, situated just outside the centre of Canterbury. The challenge was to provide a major new building without actually putting the existing 1930s pavilion out of use. Fitting neatly between the original building and the First XV rugby pitch and First X1 cricket square, the challenge was met and was opened in October 2005 by David Gower OBE OKS, a former pupil of the School.

The building consists of ground floor of sports changing rooms with a major function suite and kitchens on the first floor surrounded by a public veranda for barbecues and watching cricket and rugby. As will be seen from the photographs, The King's School, Canterbury now boasts one of the finest views of its First XV rugby pitch in the country.
